Networking

To really obtain equal opportunities in science and research, the forces of all actresses and actors going into this subject must be bundled. Therefore, one focus of CEWS activities is networking. Thus, structures for the exchange of women scientists are created, e.g., on an interdisciplinary or technical basis. On the other hand, male and female gender experts are connected with each other. And finally, we “network” ourselves with organisations which strive for equal opportunities in science and research. In all cases, experiences exchange shall be advanced, people shall learn from one another and efficiency shall be improved. We therefore string our networks not only in Germany, but all over Europe.

The cooperation with other organisations and with experts, the exchange of information and experiences as well as the common, scientifically sound development of conceptual ideas, briefly: networking, belongs to the central tasks of CEWS. In Germany, there are many smaller and bigger networks and professional associations which fight for the interests of women in science and research or in academic professions. CEWS also keeps many contacts inside and outside of Europe, which are maintained in the framework of events, lectures and projects. 

CEWS is the central contact point for networks and individuals who wish to expand their network activities  . We can use existing contacts and act as intermediary between them. New formal networks can be admitted to the distribution list at any time, and CEWS distribution means can be used, e.g., the cews.Newsletter  . 

Networking also includes the selection of relevant information, the processing, and targeted distribution of such information, in order to efficiently support the interests of women in science and research. In the sense of lobbying work, CEWS develops current and gender oriented aspects relating to modern science policy topics in due time and transports them to the women and men in decision-making positions.

Geschäftsführung für die nationale Steuerungsgruppe der Helsinki Gruppe (Business management of the national steering committee of the Helsinki Group) (Jutta Dalhoff). The Helsinki Group is the European association of the representatives of the individual governmental institutes who work in the political field of “Support of Women in Science and Research”. A national steering committee shall be established in every member state to support this European cooperation. CEWS shall be responsible for the management of the German steering committee. 

Statistical Correspondents for the Helsinki Group (Dr. Andrea Löther). CEWS send the national German delegate to this Sub-Group. The group’s objective is the compilation of data on the situation of women in science, the European harmonisation of national data collections and the development of indicators for individual areas. Through the active cooperation within the Statistical Correspondents, CEWS has become the national address for gender-specific statistics in the field of training and research. Ministries, commissioners for the advancement of women and equal opportunities as well as journalists often ask CEWS for statistics on the situation of women in science, especially in an international comparison. 

Kontaktstelle für die Bundeskonferenz der Frauenbeauftragten und Gleichstellungsbeauftragten an Hochschulen BuKoF (Contact for the federal conference of the commissioners for the advancement of women and equal opportunities) (Dr. Andrea Löther). CEWS acts as contact for the BuKoF and is in charge of some management tasks. 

Arbeitskreis Frauen in den Forschungszentren AKFiFz (Study Group of Women in the Research Centers) (Jutta Dalhoff). In this official commission of the Helmholtz Gesellschaft HGF, the commissioners for equal opportunities of fifteen HGF research centers have united to bundle the lobby groups for women scientists in the research institutions and to act as consulting body for the management board.
